Quiz on post-it
同じことばっかりやってると煮詰まるので、英語に逃避することが多い。どんなにやったところで、「この一連の作業は不毛であった」とかで終わることが当然のことのようにある研究と違って、英語はやっただけ身に付くから、いい息抜きになる。
何十年も英語大好きだけど、英語学に進まなくてよかった。英語学の博士課程にいる知人は、英語が嫌いなんだそうだ。(たぶん、学校時代にやる英語がってことだとおもう)

Please Don't Purchase Pets At Pet Stores
◆Famous TV Commercial
This is very famous TV commercial(2002) for loan company.
People loved this and Chiwawas got so popular in Japan.
They are in a big store called "Home Center" which can be seen everywhere in Japan like grocery stores.
And the way they sell the pets, it looks so familier.
The girl says, "I want a puppy", and daddy says "Not now. We have to wait until I get bonus" which indicates they can't afford a puppy (afford to BUY a puppy) right now.
And he looks at the puppy and seems impressed how cute the puppy is.
Then the narrator "Dosuru?(What're you gonna do?) AIFUL(the name of the loan company)"
Obviously, this commercial implies "Borrow money from us for anything you need! Even to buy a puppy! it's easy"
Many many people purchase their pets like this way. I'm sure that, because I see those corners in home centers everywhere. They sell when there are customers.
They are all puppies and kittens. No adult dog and cat rarely. I once saw a big cat but she was on sale. Because adult animals don't sell.
There are many I can point out it is inappropriate not only for TV commercial but also the whole situation, but I just say for now "Should people borrow money from loan company in this situation?"
I know the CM maker know the answer, No. They're just showing one extreme unbelievable situation to make it impressive and humorous. Even so, it is not appropriate, I think.
◆Where Do They Come From?
Most of the people who bought their pets from those kind of stores love them and treat them as a member of their family. People just love them, I see that. Most of the people are nice to animals.
But I wonder how many people have ever thought about his/her mom and dad and where s/he come from.
This is called Puppy mill.
I can't say all of the pets at pet stores are from those, but I believe most of them are. Or from Backyard breeders.
The conditions is really bad. Many small cages in small room, dirty, no enough food.
Female dogs get pregnant every heat, and when they can't get pregnant anymore, they will be killed. Babies will be apart from mother too soon because smaller sell. Even worse, babies wouldn't get enough food to save cost and to slow growing because smaller sell.
This is one of the cases.

The stray or homeless cat and dogs go there and eventually get killed by poisoning gas.
You can adupt one from there and save a life. If you are sensitive and don't wanna see the cage, you can ask office staff to bring you one.

You can find those websites on the internet.
-Bring the homeless one in home
I guess not so many homeless dogs in town now but cats are.

There are many homeless cats because few heartless bad people come and bump them at the park when they no longer need them.
Aslan was so scared of people at first. I go to the park almost everyday and after 6 months, he let me touch him. He ate from my hand. Then, I caught him using laundry net and brought him home (and vet).
At first, he had a hard time getting used to new life with a human, including goind to vet many times(for neuter service, vaccines,) but few months later, he seemed happy, and started to love me.
Up until today, it has been 4 years, I am so happy to have him everyday. He makes me laugh almost every single day.

self-torment
今日はTOEFL。一年に一回自らに課す200ドル4時間の苦行である・・・。
朝6時におきていたのにギリギリに会場につき、プリントアウトした登録情報？みたいなものを係員に渡した、のだが、私の登録番号がない様子。
私「私、中野で申し込んだんです。でも今朝確認したら、新宿になってたから、会場が変わったんだと思ってこちらへきたんですけど、もしかして何かありましたか？」
（心の中の声：もし手違いがあったとしても、ここで受けられるだろう。きっとこういうときのために補助席を設けているに決まってる）
違う係員がきて、私の登録票を確認。
係員「これ2009年になっていますが・・・」
手違えたのは私のほうだった！2009年に受けたときの情報を、プリントアウトしてもってきていたのだ。
TOEFLのマイページから、「View Order」かなんかのリンクをクリックして、そのまま出てきたページをプリントアウトしていた。まさか以前のが残っていたなんて・・・
しかも前回の日付が、2009 March 22 だったの。きょうは？2010 May 22 でしょ（笑）
見間違えた（笑）
それでもまだ、受けられるだろうと希望を捨てていなかったが、なんと、ただしい会場（中野）でないと受けられないと。もうちょっと柔軟に頼むよと思ったが時間はないし、悪いのは自分だ。タクシーを拾って中野まで。駅まで徒歩20分、電車五分、徒歩五分、よりはタクシーが早いと思ったからだが、大久保通りが混んでいてひやひやした。なんとか時間（集合時間の50分後れ）内に会場に着いて、受けさせてもらえることに。
よかった！！
内容は2回目だからか、前回よりずっとやりやすかった。
テストが終わったら今度は銀座に脱毛に。期限なしの脱毛があと2回残ってて、2年ぶりのサロンだった。もう何度も脱毛してる箇所だから、毛量も最初に比べたら痛くない（脱毛の光は黒くて太い毛に反応するので最初がいちばん痛い）。だけど、いつも脱毛前の準備（そったり、ジェル塗ったり、スイッチが入った機械がうなりだしたり・・・）中は怖くて叫びだしたくなる。注射の前の消毒みたいな感じ・・・。
両方、自分で好き好んで予約を入れたわけだけど、なんだか苦行じみた一日だったわ。はあ。

土曜日TOEFLなんですー
高いから（200ドル）、一年に一度くらいしか受けられません。
最近、日に日に、起床時間が遅くなっている。TOEFLの開始は10時。早いよね！
13時でいいと思うんだけど。
前回初めて受けたときは、遅刻ギリギリで、駅からタクシーでようやく間に合った。

なんで形容詞と副詞でこんなに意味が違ってしまうのだろう。自分では使わないしなかなか覚えられない。
substantial をGoogleして用例をしらべてみます。（フツーに使われている例が知りたいので、わざと17ページ目くらいあたりから見ます。最初のあたりのページって単語そのものがタイトルになってたり、辞書とかWikiとか出てきちゃいますよね、あと、検索オプションで英語を指定します）

仕事で、外国人用に注射の補助金の書類を英訳したので、ちょっとノートしておく。

身分はstatusという言い方をしているのをここで聞いたことがあるので、statusでいいとして
よくある「該当にチェック」はどう訳すか？
日本語のものを英語にしていてよく思うのが、日本語のほうは、不必要な文章が前にきませんか？
「これは申込書です。（見りゃ、わかる！）」「以下のご案内を案内します（こんな日本語ではないにせよ、一見すればわかることをいちいち前置きする）」
今回も、補助金制度なのだが、補助金制度の案内 というそのものズバリ！のタイトルの見出しが続くにも関わらず、「補助金を出すことにしました。（だから、見りゃ、わかるんだって）うんぬん、かんぬん・・・」と前置きがある。
ここで、私はいらんものは削ってしまいたいが、訳を私に頼んでいる人は、自分の文章ときれいに対応する形での英語を望んでいるので（そうしないとわかりにくい）、「えっここの文章はどこいっちゃったの」ということになる。「いらないんで削りました！」と胸はって言えるほど、自信もないので、望まれるまま、直訳したものを渡すことにしている。
「該当にチェック」も、たとえば □男 □女 とあったら、チェックしろなんていちいち言われなくても、反射的にチェックするんじゃないだろうか。
それをいちいち書くから、英語が長くなる。長くなるから、メールを読み飛ばされるのだ。そして、よく読まない人がルール通りに出してこなくて、仕事が増えるんじゃないだろうか。考えすぎ？
ちなみに、該当にチェックは、check the item which applies とした。これも、Googleで用法を調べて、これにした。
補助金の申請書には、ほかには「確認者」という欄があった。
結局、内輪で回すものなので（だからこそ、私の訳でも問題ないわけだ。重要な文書であれば、国際課に英文添削のネイティブに頼む）、確認者は、直訳でConfirmarでいいや… きっとConfirmarには日本人がなるんだし日本語直訳で… と、きっとほかにいい語があるんだろうけど、Confirmarとした。
そして次の文言。
「確認者は、通常の立て替え払いの確認者に同じ」
これ日本語だとすっと意味がわかりますが、英語にするとなると、難しい（私は）。

まではいいですよね。
このあと、as のあとに、「立て替え払い（Advance Payment?）」をすぐに持ってきたら、「立て替え払いと同じ人」になってしまう気がする。「立て替え払い」は人じゃないから、並列したらおかしい（気がする）。
では、ベースとなる日本語を以下に変えたらどうか。
「確認者は、通常あなたが立て替え払いをするときに頼む確認者と同じ人であるべきである」
しかしwhenを使って長くしたくない。asを使って、あとは句レベル（節じゃなく）でおさえたい。
苦し紛れに

としてみた。
意味は通じそう。だが、as in the case・・・という言い方なんてあるのだろうか。
私の親友のGoogleは、前置詞や冠詞は拾わないので、as in the case でぐぐっても、収穫は少ない。
次、申請書に領収書をはるところがあります。
日本語では「領収書貼付欄」とある。直訳するとなんか子どもみたいになる（「レシートを、はるところ。」みたいな）気がして、同じような請求書フォームをグーグルで探してみた。

あっほらほらこれを見て！やっぱり、女、男、会員、扶養家族、子ども、学生のところに、チェックいれるところがあるけど、「チェックせよ」なんて書いていませんよね！！
チェックせよと指示しているのは、「ほかの機関から費用の負担がある場合はここにチェックせよ」とかそういうスペシフィックなときだけですよね。（そのすぐ下を参照。）
久しぶりに、英訳楽しかったです。私は和訳より英訳が100倍好きです。
なぜなら、訳すべきオリジナルを100%理解することができるから。
和訳するときって、いつも「もしかして全然違う意味に理解しているかも・・・」という心地の悪さがある。
それから、Grant-in-Aidで検索して、参考にしたページ。なんのグラントなのかさっぱりわからないのですが・・・。

補助の上限、はThe maximum grant amountでいいんですね。
それからちょっと目についたこの文、意味がとれません。

along with any revision がわかりません。
改訂ひっくるめて、最新のものは2009年5月1日現在のものですよ ということなんでしょうか（そりゃそうか？）
でも自分からは絶対にでてこない言い回しですよね。along with any revision。

このあと、as のあとに、「立て替え払い（Advance Payment?）」をすぐに持ってきたら、「立て替え払いと同じ人」になってしまう気がする。「立て替え払い」は人じゃないから、並列したらおかしい（気がする）。
では、ベースとなる日本語を以下に変えたらどうか。
「確認者は、通常あなたが立て替え払いをするときに頼む確認者と同じ人であるべきである」
しかしwhenを使って長くしたくない。asを使って、あとは句レベル（節じゃなく）でおさえたい。
苦し紛れに

としてみた。
意味は通じそう。だが、as in the case・・・という言い方なんてあるのだろうか。
私の親友のGoogleは、前置詞や冠詞は拾わないので、as in the case でぐぐっても、収穫は少ない。
次、申請書に領収書をはるところがあります。
日本語では「領収書貼付欄」とある。直訳するとなんか子どもみたいになる（「レシートを、はるところ。」みたいな）気がして、同じような請求書フォームをグーグルで探してみた。

久しぶりに、英訳楽しかったです。私は和訳より英訳が100倍好きです。

補助の上限、はThe maximum grant amountでいいんですね。
それからちょっと目についたこの文、意味がとれません。

areが動詞でそれ以前の全部が、主語ですよね
along with any revision がわかりません。
改訂ひっくるめて、最新のものは2009年5月1日現在のものですよ ということなんでしょうか（そりゃそうか？）
でも自分からは絶対にでてこない言い回しですよね。along with any revision。
